AI FOR THE BLUE BIOECONOMY
SeaweedSenseAI
Smarter pathways for sustainable seaweed processing
SeaweedSenseAI uses advanced modelling to help UK seaweed biorefineries improve yield, preserve valuable compounds and reduce energy use before committing to costly lab trials.

THE CHALLENGE
From guesswork to predictive insight
Seaweed is one of the UK's most promising renewable resources, but inconsistent feedstocks and trial-and-error processing make it difficult to recover maximum value. Processors need faster ways to compare extraction, drying and conversion choices.
The platform combines graph diffusion models with a Mixture of Experts architecture. It maps relationships between seaweed composition and processing conditions, while specialist models adapt recommendations to different species and stages.

How it works
Model the pathway
Connect species, composition and process variables in one decision framework.
Optimise multiple goals
Balance product yield, energy demand, compound quality and environmental performance.
Compare scenarios
Test processing routes virtually and prioritise the strongest options for lab validation.
What the project will deliver
✓ A proof-of-concept AI optimisation engine.
✓ A simulated demonstrator targeting 10 to 20% improvements in yield or efficiency.
✓ A feasibility and technical report for industrial adoption.
✓ A roadmap for lab validation and future scale-up.
A faster route to a circular, data-enabled bioeconomy
Higher-value recovery from UK seaweed, less energy and material wasted in early experimentation, and faster R&D for sustainable bioproducts.
